The cousins are coming, the cousins are coming! I plan to make a lot of treats while they’re here, but Juliet and I got a head start today by whipping up some Lemon Poppy Seed Sugar Cookies. I’ve made them before, and they always turn out addictively delicious. This time I added cuteness to the mix because Juliet decided she wanted to be part of the process.
She was already gearing herself up to help me get the house ready for guests, and took it upon herself to sweep the floor. Sort of.
I assembled the ingredients, and zested one big bright yellow lemon.
Then Juliet measured out the white sugar — I did the brown — and poured it into the bowl. I even let her level it off with a knife this time.
I had to use the stand mixer to get the sugar and the butter creamed, so I waited a few minutes to let her help with the dry ingredients. She took on the flour measuring as well.
She also added the baking soda, baking powder, and salt, but especially enjoyed pouring in the poppy seeds.
I started the whisking, but then handed off the responsibility to my apprentice.
She added in the lemon I’d already zested. I handled the vanilla.
And then Nathaniel came long and stole my helper! He suggested going outside to play and that was that. She promised to return in time for the cookie scooping.
There he is, stealing my apprentice.
But I called her back in when the batter was ready to be scooped and placed on the pan. She had a pretty good time with it.
She did one tray, then ran back off to play, and I handled the rest. They turned out great, as always.
And a good time was had by all, despite the fact that Juliet still calls them “lemon seed poppy muffin cookies.”
